Before mid-winter break I introduced a reading challenge to students to help our dragon grow. Every scale you see displayed represents 20-30 minutes of at home reading. As I hand out scales to students, I ask if they read more over break to earn a scale, and they said yes. Congratulations Bryant readers, and thanks for helping our dragon grow! January 29th is National Puzzle Day. What do you think of when someone mentions puzzles? Jigsaw puzzles? Logic puzzles and "thinking" games (sudoku, Mastermind, chess, etc.)? Word puzzles (crossword, word jumble, etc.)? There are also a number of fiction stories with challenging puzzles to solve. Here are some books and/or series that will encourage readers put on their thinking caps. Also included are links to related puzzling resources.

Book Fair during WinterefestThe winter Book Fair is a PTSA fundraiser where the proceeds go to help support the library budget. The Secret Garden Bookshop, an independent bookseller in Ballard, brings in crates of books, and then we set up a small bookstore in the library. Bryant PTSA receives 25% of the proceeds from the book purchases. On top of that, when I shop at the Secret Garden, I receive a 20% discount. I use these proceeds to buy a wide variety of books. I purchase books that support state reading lists, student and teacher requests. The image above shows just a few of the new books that have come into the library this year thanks to the Book Fair... |
