“Garden Buddies” The Parent Volunteer Garden Group at Bryant On Saturday, the boys from Cub Scout Pack 144 and their families came out to spruce up the NE corner of the school. Even in rain pouring from the sky they weeded and planted ferns. Thank you for your helping hands! Garden Buddies will continue to arrive early on Thursdays, weather permitting, so students can come and work in the Hands on Garden. There is a little more to harvest and then raking and blanketing the beds with leaves from the tulip trees around the school. All students and their families are welcome! Garden Buddies are active from Sept to Thanksgiving break, and again from March to the end of school. For more information, feel free to contact Gretchen Bauer 525-3143 or Jennifer Sayers |

Please join us this Thursday morning Oct 8th at 9:00am in the Hands-On Garden. We’ll draw names at 9:15am to see who gets to take home the magnificent pumpkins grown in our very own garden. You’ll have 9 chances to win! And parents, if you can stick around, we’d love to garden with you! We’ll meet 9:30-10:30am Thursday in the Hands-On Garden. Hope to see you there! Garden Buddies will begin meeting Thursday, March 12, 9-10am (weather permitting). We’ll meet every Thursday morning until the end of the school year.
Our plan for the spring is:
- Weeding and pruning
- Planting a gorgeous spring/summer garden
- Getting kids more involved in our gardens
- Having a great time!
Even if you don’t have time to get your hands dirty with us, we could still use your help! - Be a docent for a class gardening project
- Provide educational material to students
- Guide a planting project in one of the gardens

Despite the turn in the weather, Garden Buddies have accomplished a lot in the last two weeks:
- Planted bamboo on the west side of the school
- Planted Gulf Stream Nandina near the parking lot
- Transplanted the existing Nandina to the garden near Tamie’s
- Removed the blackberries that were creeping onto the playground
- Pruned bushes around the playground perimeter
Our new bamboo and Gulf Stream Nandina were generously donated by Mary Hood. Thank you, Mary! Several Bryant student volunteers have come early to help weed on Thursday mornings before school. They are really a big help, and they have a lot of fun. Some new parents and younger Bryant siblings have tried out Garden Buddies, too. We are so glad you joined us.
As always, Garden Buddies will be meeting 9-10am on Thursday to continue the work in the Hands-On Garden and around the school. And stay tuned for details about leaf raking before the morning. Contact us: Amy Kanai 526-5298 or Gretchen Bauer 525-3143. |
