Chess Anyone? Bryant Chess Club is a large active club open to all students (kindergarten on up) of all skill levels to meet, play and learn more about chess.

The club meets on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, October 7th to March 24th (20 Thursdays). Club groups meet in the Lunch Room and Library, and we hope to reserve a third practice area in the school soon, but on our opening day festival, everyone starts in the lunch room.

Congratulations to the 19 Bryant students who participated in the annual State Chess Tournament on Saturday, April 24th, in Tacoma, Washington.  All players competed in 5 rounds and had a great time hanging out with each other between games.  The Bryant team showed great sportsmanship as well as school spirit in their blue chess club tshirts.

Chess QFC Fundraiser Recap PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bryant Weekly

chessThe Bryant Chess Club held their annual fundraiser at QFC over mid-winter break.  We had 37 chess club members who took on shopping patrons in some friendly chess matches.  The club exceeded its $1,000 goal and raised $1,200 -- which included an anonymous $100 donation -- the $100 bill was discreetly wrapped into a $5 bill!  Thanks to all those who supported this tradition of playing at QFC -- and a special "thank you" to Eve Riskin for organizing the player scheduling and daily set-up.

Interested in a second weekly day of chess?

We are in discussions with a Chess Master who is proposing to teach a chess class either on Monday or Tuesday evenings. It will be geared for the enthusiast chess player of intermediate or higher level. If interested, contact Damon Gunn (63da9263a4c0c8f48bafa359e62dc63d ).

Puzzle Hint: The poor black king left the back door open. The white rook slides up using the classic “back rank mate”.

Chess Club Corner

Announcements:
First Day of Chess Club October 1st:  All chess club members should go to the lunch room after school (on Thursday) for opening day festivities.

Chess Club members should have received an email confirmation.  If not, please email Damon and Pat Gunn at 63da9263a4c0c8f48bafa359e62dc63d

Puzzle Hint:  Using the not so secret code of chess notation: Bxh6.  In chess notation the beginning capitol letter represents the name of a piece (K –> King, Q –> Queen, B –> Bishop, R –> Rook, N –> Knight).  If there is no capitol letter a pawn is assumed.  “x” stands for takes.  The last letter/number combo tells which square the action takes place on.
