A Science event for K-3 students
March 18, 6pm-8pm at Bryant.

It is the first year for this event and hopefully it will become an annual one. K-3 Science Night will expose Kindergarten to Third grade students to Science outside of school. It will invite them to be part of the Science community, and show them that Science can be found in just about everything. The goal of the event is to show kids that there is a place for them in the Science community and encourage them to think about Science in all that they do.

I am sure you have heard of the Science Fair for 4th and 5th graders. K-3 Science Night offers an equally exciting event for the younger students at the school. The Science Fair and K-3 Science Night are not the same events; however the theme of Science is the same.

How is K-3 Science Night different from Science Fair?

K-3 Science Night is only for K-3 students to participate.

Science Fair is only for 4th and 5th grade students to participate.

K-3 Science Night is on March 18th, 2010.

Science Fair is on March 25th, 2010.

No school time is spent on preparing the students for K-3 Science Night. All preparation is done at home.

Science Fair preparation for the students is done during school hours.

The K-3 Science Night team has assured the teachers that no class time will be spent on preparing for the event, and that no parent or student will solicit help from the teachers. The K-3 Science Night is a parent sponsored event and we have made an agreement that absolutely no additional work will be imposed upon the teachers. If the parents do not honor this, then we will not be allowed to continue with the event in the future. The K-3 Science Night team is equipped with enough resources to make sure that all the children who would like to attend have support from Professional Scientists. The K-3 teachers are supportive of the idea and excited to attend the event.

Teachers are involved in the preparation of Science Fair.

At K-3 Science Night there are no mentors, just helpful parents at home to practice the experiments. We have set up a website for parents to help give kids ideas on what experiment to perform. Ideally, a child will try many experiments before deciding. The whole purpose of the event is to get kids working with science. Please visit www.nerisatellite.com/science

At Science Fair students have Science Mentors.

How will K-3 Science Night take place?

This is how we see the event taking place:

Months prior to the event kids will visit the K-3 Science Night website and try many experiments. Kids will submit a blog entry for any of the experiments and therefore the community grows, and kids also get to use their computer skills. Kids will keep an Experiment Journal (template pages found on the website) which will help them learn record keeping and documentation skills. They can bring their Journal to the K-3 Science Night to share with others.

On the evening of March 18th, kids who have previously signed up will be assigned a table at the event. At that child's table he/she will have space to demonstrate his/her experiment or show documentation of an experiment done at home. We will also have Professional Scientist who will do just the same. A Professional Scientist is a K-3 parent who is an actual Scientist and who would like to participate in the event. Professional Scientist will have space on a table to do an experiment, or show documentation of an experiment done at work. All Scientists, big and small, are encouraged to bring all the neat things required to perform his/her experiment, and this is where those Professional Scientist with all their fancy equipment will really shine.

K-3 Science Night F.A.Q.

Where do we get the experiments?
Off of the website www.nerisatellite.com/science, from the Internet, books or magazines.

What if my child is not comfortable doing an experiment by him/herself?
Once we get more Professional Scientists then we can ask them if they need an "assistant". If the answer is yes, then we will post that information on the website. Kids can also work as a team among themselves. If three kids want to perform the experiment and share the table space, that is fine.

Can a parent do an experiment?
Only parents who are Professional Scientists are asked to participate at this time.

Are there prizes or winners to the event?
No.

How can I participate to K-3 Science Night?

If you are a Professional Scientist and would like to participate please contact me at 279ca9e0d12217e161a310d10589ae7c

If you are a parent who would like to volunteer on that evening for set-up, or break-down please contact me at 279ca9e0d12217e161a310d10589ae7c

Right now it is important that we are able to confirm Professional Scientists and Parent Volunteers. If you are able to make a commitment now for the date of March 18th we would appreciate it. In late January we will start to ask kids to sign up.

So – please mark March 18th down on your calendars, contact me if you can participate as a Professional Scientist or Parent Volunteer, visit the website and get your child excited about Science, and contact me if you have any questions at 279ca9e0d12217e161a310d10589ae7c

We are very excited about the event and think that it is going to be fantastic – but we need your participation and enthusiasm. Let's show the K-3rd graders that Science is important and alive at Bryant!
