Art Wizards

Instructor: Ilene Adler
Grade range: 1st -5th
Time: Fridays, 3:45-4:45 & 4:45-5:45 (second session contingent on enrollment)
Location: Library

In Art Wizards, kids learn to draw the things that kids find exciting.  That’s why kids find Art Wizards so much fun.  When students learn to draw the right way, they learn to love art.  They can fill the hours of summer creating beautiful drawings, and enjoy every minute.

The most important part of learning to draw is learning to see.  Many adults and most teens never developed that skill.  And all elementary students regardless of age need these skills.  That’s where we start.  We give them all the information they need to be successful, but not so much that we stifle their imagination or limit their opportunities.  With consistent and ongoing practice, our students are amazed at the progress they make.  Projects include spring sports and spring flowers, fish, birds and animals of all kinds, people, landscapes, still life, mythical creatures, movie characters and cartoons.  We show them how to break down a scene or character so it comes out looking like what they intended.  We show them how easy it can be when they know how to use chalk and oil pastels.  They’ll learn when it’s better to use colored pencils and where markers and watercolor fit in.  It’s easy!  It’s exciting!  It’s rewarding!  And it has a super-positive effect on all other subjects.  Check out the galleries at artwizards.org.

Artist Trading Cards with Elaine

Instructor: Elaine D. Woodhouse, CertEd, CQSW
Grade range: K-5th
Time: Tuesdays 3:45-4:45
Location: Rm 103

The concept of miniature pieces of art in a trading card format was the brainchild of Swiss artist M. Vänci Stirnemann. Limited only by its size of 3.5” x 2.5”, children and adults alike, create art to collect, trade or share. Recently, our cards were shared with children in Guatemala! As a card enthusiast, I have traded my art cards both nationally and internationally. In this class students will have the opportunity to use a vast variety of materials and art techniques to make their miniature art. Some cards may pop up, spin, open, or surprise. We will collage, sew, sculpt, fold and weave a card collection that will represent a wide spectrum of creativity. In addition to a class “project” card, students will always have the opportunity to experiment with materials and design their own cards. The number of cards you can make is restricted only by the time available. Students will receive a binder and protective card sheets to store their work.
